Hiking Passport

Privacy Policy

There is no account and no cloud. This page spells out exactly what Hiking Passport reads, the one thing that leaves your iPhone, and how to turn any of it off.

Overview

Hiking Passport is an iPhone app that turns the hikes you are chasing into a passport you fill in over a season. It builds a training plan from your own activity, and shows your progress as a drawn scene rather than a chart.

There is no account to create and no login. I do not run a server, and I never sell anyone's personal information. Your passport, your hikes, your notes, and your photos are stored on your iPhone and nowhere else.

What the app reads from Apple Health

The app asks permission to read five things from Apple Health. You choose what to allow, and you can change your mind at any time.

  • Steps
  • Walking and running distance
  • Flights climbed
  • Active energy
  • Workouts

That is the whole list. The app reads nothing else from Apple Health, and it never writes anything back. It does not read your heart rate, your sleep, your cardio fitness, or your body measurements. If you decline a category, or skip Apple Health entirely, the app still works and you log your hiking by hand.

What it reads stays on your iPhone. It is used to fill in your season and to size your training plan, and it is cached on the device so the app works offline.

How your plan is generated

Your training plan is built by rules that run on your iPhone. It is not generated by an AI model, and nothing about your training is sent anywhere to produce it.

Apple Intelligence is used in three small places, and only ever to write words: looking up a trail's published statistics when you ask it to, naming your plan, and putting your hiking buddy's daily note in their own voice. These run on your iPhone using Apple's on-device model. Hiking Passport does not send them to Apple's Private Cloud Compute or to any other server. Turn Apple Intelligence off and the app keeps working, with the same plan.

What you tell the app directly

Setup asks what you need the plan to work around, and you can tell it about an injury, a disability, a hard schedule, money, transport, or anything else that shapes how you train. That is sensitive information and it is treated that way. It is stored on your iPhone, it is used on your iPhone, and it is never sent anywhere.

The same is true of everything else you enter: your hikes, your summit dates, your ratings and moods, your notes and journal entries, and any photo you attach to a summit.

Apple Watch and widgets

If you use the Apple Watch app or the Home Screen widgets, the app shares a copy of your passport and your plan with them on your own devices, so they can display it and keep working offline. That copy moves between your iPhone and your Apple Watch directly. It does not pass through me.

No sync and no backup

Hiking Passport does not use iCloud and does not sync. A passport lives on the iPhone that made it, and a new iPhone starts empty. The upside is that nothing of yours is stored anywhere I could reach.

Purchases

Subscriptions are handled by Apple and by RevenueCat, which keeps track of whether your subscription is active. This is the only network connection the app makes. RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier for your install, your purchase and receipt status, and basic device and platform information. It does not receive your name, your email, your Apple Health data, your hikes, or your photos.

Apple handles the payment itself. I never see your card details.

Analytics and tracking

There are none. Hiking Passport contains no analytics and no crash reporting service, it does not track you, and it does not collect data for advertising or measurement across apps or websites. Apple may share aggregate crash and usage reports with me through App Store Connect if you have opted into sharing those with developers in your iOS settings. Those come from Apple, not from anything in the app, and they do not identify you.

Your choices

  • Turn off Health access. Open the Health app, tap your picture, then Privacy, then Apps, then Hiking Passport. Turn off any category, or all of them.
  • Turn off Apple Intelligence. In iOS Settings, under Apple Intelligence. The app keeps working and your plan does not change.
  • Delete everything. Deleting the app removes the data it stored on your iPhone. Your Apple Health data belongs to Apple Health and stays there.
  • Ask me to delete a purchase record. Email me and I will have RevenueCat delete the record tied to your install.

Children

Hiking Passport is not directed to children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child gave me theirs, email me and I will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If the app starts handling your information differently, I will update this page and change the date at the top. The version you are reading was last updated on September 15, 2026.
